background | publications

Saoirse’s research involves the use of X-ray computed tomography (CT) techniques to visualise root architecture in three dimensions in undisturbed soil columns over time. This project is specifically investigating the effects of soil compaction and drought on root growth. Currently, three plant species have been chosen for investigation: Arabidopsis thaliana, as it is the genetic model and most previous root growth experiments using A. thaliana involved the use of artificial growing media, and also the crop plants Triticum aestivum L. (wheat) and Lycopersicon esculentum L. (tomato).
