Hormonal regulation of the root and shoot meristem
Plants display a remarkable ability to grow and produce new organs post-embryonically. The postembryonic development is achieved by division and specification of pluripotent stem cells called meristems. The Root apical meristem (RAM) is located at the root tip where it controls the root growth. The Shoot apical meristem (SAM) is found at the shoot apex where it participates in the shoot growth as well as formation of flowers and leaves Many of the same components, such as auxin, cytokinin and its inhibitor AHP6 regulate meristem patterning in the both the root and the shoot. However, it is not clear what factors act upstream to regulate their expression. In this project we will investigate the regulation of these components and identify similarities between gene regulation in these two meristems.
